| Welcome to the ISC Website Hosted on Slicehost! |
|
If you're viewing this page, it was served to you courtesy of ISC's webserver at Slicehost.
The new server is a "virtual private server" like our old one at FluidHosting
except that our Slicehost server is "non-managed". To help with managing the new server, I've employed the services of AcuNett.
Hopefully, this arrangement will provide a little more flexibility to configure our server exactly how we want it, to upgrade our software
when we want to and to have an environment nearly identical to an actual "dedicated server".

| ISC Forums and Webmaster Email |
|
For a short period of time after the transition to our new webserver the discussion forums and webmaster email
will be unavailable. This should only last a day or two at most...

US Sailing's Sportmanship Trophy Awarded the 14 Year Old J.D. Reddaway (W. Van Alan Clark Jr. Trophy) |
|
US Sailing presented the W. Van Alan Clark Jr. Trophy, to J.D. Reddaway (Suwanee, GA) for his outstanding display of
sportsmanship behavior at the Orange Bowl Junior Olympic Sailing Festival last December. Reddaway, who at the age of
14 is the youngest-ever recipient of the trophy, was presented with the trophy at Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville
last Saturday where he was competing in the Thistle Orange Peel Regatta as crew for his father.
Reddaway was selected for the National Sportsmanship award based on an incident that occurred in the final race of the
Orange Bowl regatta, where he was competing in the 85-boat Optimist Red fleet. During the starting sequence, a younger
sailor capsized shortly after the raising of the class flag. J.D. was aware that the sailor was not readily righting
his boat and sailed over to communicate with him. Recognizing the boy was distraught and potentially injured, J.D.
promptly stood up in his boat and signaled for assistance. Since the race was in a starting sequence, there was no one
immediately available to assist this sailor. J.D. made a quick and unselfish decision to abandon his boat and swam to
the sailor in need. The fellow competitor was tangled in his mainsheet so J.D. helped clear the entanglement and
stayed with the young sailor to comfort him while waiting for assistance.
Reddaway now joins a long list of highly respected sailors who have received US Sailing's W. Van Alan Clark Jr.
Sportsmanship Trophy since the award was first presented 20 years ago. The list includes such well-known sailors as
Olin J Stephens, Dave Perry, Harry Carpenter, and Buddy Melges.

| Upcoming Switch to Slicehost |
|
Sometime in the next couple of weeks I will be switching our server from FluidHosting
to Slicehost. I'm making the change not because I'm dissatisfied with FluidHosting but
rather to have a server that I have more control over. FluidHosting only offers servers with a control panel installed which limits
the software that I can install. Slicehost offers servers without a control panel so that I have complete control over what software gets
installed (well, with the exception of the operating system itself).
I plan to pre-configure and test the new Slicehost server as fully as possible before the switch but there is always the possiblility
that something might not function correctly. If you need assistance during the transition, I can be reached at (email address removed)

| ISC Member Does Some Springtime "Pruning" |
|
With the help of an aerial lift supplied by ISC member Steve McDonald's Sunbelt Rental in Fishers, Scott Hicks
gives a willow a little "pruning" from the top down. The willow had long been next to the ISC Junior Training shed
and interfered with launching boats due to its overhanging branches. Scott trimmed it down to the ground and fixed
the problem!

| Paige Railey and Jud Smith Named US Sailing's Rolex Yachtswoman and Yachtsman of the Year |
|
Jud Smith (Marblehead, MA) and Paige Railey (Clearwater, FL) took center stage during a special luncheon
at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan. The sailors are US Sailing's Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the
Year, this country's most prestigious honor in the sport. They were recognized for their outstanding
on-the-water performances during the 2006 calendar year and presented with engraved Rolex timepieces.
Smith was recognized for his victories at several Etchells regattas, including the World Championship, as
well as for his wins in several other classes. In addition to the Etchells Worlds, Smith won the class'
North American Championship, Lands' End Annapolis NOOD Regatta, Florida State Championship and Acura Miami
Race Week. Proving his versatility on other boats, Smith also won the Rhodes 19 National and East Coast
Championships. He also crewed on the class winners at the Rolex Big Boat Series, the Lands' End Chicago
NOOD Regatta and the Verve Cup.
"Winning this award feels different than I expected," said Smith. "I've always thought that the sailors
who have won the award in the past had reached the pinnacle in their careers. I don't feel I've reached
my ultimate goal yet; I still have time before I 'arrive.'"
Railey, the youngest woman ever to receive the Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year award, was recognized for her
accomplishments on foreign waters. Among the US Sailing Team member's victories were the Semaine Olympique
Française in Hyères, France; the ISAF World Sailing Games in Neusiedl, Austria; and the Good Luck Beijing-2006
Qingdao International Regatta, the first test event in China at the venue of the 2008 Olympic Regatta. At home,
Railey also triumphed at the Laser Radial North American and Midwinter East Championships.
"It feels really fantastic to win this," said Paige Railey, who won the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year
award last fall and hopes to represent the USA at the 2008 Olympic Games. "It's so nice to come home and
receive this award from the U.S. sailing community, and I look forward to continuing on this path."
