Scott Young Wins US Sailing's Men's Championship
(Clifford D. Mallory Cup)

Scott Young (Austin, TX) knows a thing or two about competing in and winning a US Sailing National Championship, he has done it many times before. Today, Young won his fifth U.S. Men's Championship title, a feat no other sailor has accomplished before in the event's 54-year history. This is the third time Young won the event as a skipper (which has been done before) and he also won it twice as crew.

"I'm so excited," said Young after getting off the water at the end of today's racing. "I'm not sure yet where I'm going to put the trophy this time," he commented about the Mallory Cup, which is presented to the winner of the U.S. Men's Championship.

With several past winners of the Championship in the fleet, this wasn't an easy regatta win for Young and his crew John Morran and Douglas Kern (all from Austin, TX). What made it even more difficult for Young and his crew was that the team had never sailed in Sonars before, the boats used in the event. Going into today, this team sailing out of Austin Yacht Club was just three points ahead of the Louisiana team of David Bolyard Jr., Kurt Adler, and David Bolyard Sr. (a previous Mallory Cup winner), all from Mandeville, LA. Just another four points behind was another past champion, Charles Quigley of host club Boston Yacht Club.

"It was exciting even going into the final race today," said Young. "We had a good start and managed to stay ahead. We tried to stay clean, out of trouble and sail consistently this regatta and that's what we did."

With 3-2 finishes in today's racing, Young managed to stay ahead of Bolyard, an 18-year-old sailor whose crew included his father, by six points overall. Behind Bolyard, Charles Quigley finished in third place overall with 44 points.

In addition to winning the U.S. Men's Championship five times, Young has won two other US Sailing National Championship titles in his sailing career: as a youth sailor, he won the U.S. Junior Doublehanded Championship (Bemis Trophy) in 1975 and the U.S. Junior Singlehanded Championship (Smythe Trophy) in 1976.

Vicki Sodaro Wins US Sailing's Women's Championship
(Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Cup)

It was a Californian sweep at the end of the U.S. Women's Championship, hosted by Edgewater Yacht Club and sailed in J/24s, as the team of Vicki Sodaro (Tiburon, CA), Stephanie Wondolleck (San Rafael, CA), Karina Vogen Shelton (Watsonville, CA), and Emily French (Santa Cruz, CA) representing Northern California won the title to take home US Sailing's Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy. This was the second time for Sodaro to win the Adams Cup (she also won it in 2002), one of the oldest women's sports trophies in the United States. Meanwhile, another team from California finished in second place.

Sodaro and her team came out with a bang on the first day of racing, taking bullets in the first three races of the day. Throughout the four-day regatta, Sodaro's team dominated the Championship, winning eight out of 11 races. "I had just a great crew and that made it nice," said Sodaro. "All I had to do was steer."

After a disappointing day on Friday, the second team from California, led by Susan Taylor (Los Angeles, CA) with crew Kellie Fennessy (Torrance, CA), Denise George (Los Angeles, CA) and Michelle Ondrey (Santa Monica, CA), managed to come back with a sixth place finish in the final race to finish second overall to take home US Sailing's Mrs. Willis Woods Trophy.

In third place and winner of the Alexander Guest Trophy was the team of Anne Mooney (Oyster Bay, NY), Christina Blaise (Locust Valley, NY), Alexandra Hahn (Oyster Bay, NY) and Nina DeNigris (Oyster Bay, NY). The team from Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club also took home the Francis McElwain Wakeman Sportsmanship Award.

Team Silver Panda Wins US Sailing's Team Racing Championship
(George R. Hinman Trophy)

After three days of thrilling racing at San Diego Yacht Club at the U.S. Team Racing Championship for US Sailing's Hinman Trophy, the event wrapped up on Sunday with a convincing win by Team Silver Panda. Having won the event before in 2002 but sailing with slightly different crew, Silver Panda led the way on Sunday by winning every race. Members of the winning team are Colin Merrick (Portsmouth, RI), Clay Bischoff (New York, NY), Amanda Callahan (Canton, MA), Elizabeth Hall (Bristol, RI), Lisa Keith (Boston, MA), and Peter Levesque (Annapolis, MD).

Before getting on the water on Sunday morning, the final day of the U.S. Team Racing Championship, Amanda Callahan of Silver Panda said "The conditions are great here, ideal actually. They're perfect for team racing." And that certainly turned out to be true for Silver Panda, which started its day by defeating Team Adirondack in the quarter final (2-0), then faced arch rivals Cape Cod WHishbone in the semis, dismissing them with a 3-0 win before defeating the team from Larchmont Yacht Club in the finals with another 3-0 win.
