| America's Cup 2007 Website Profiles Yachts |
|
The 2007 America's Cup website has added profiles of the following yachts:
- Young America (USA-36): The
New York Yacht Club's 1995 America's Cup Defender is highlighted by a painting of a mermaid along her side done by pop artist
Roy Lichtenstein. Young America actually lost the Defender trials
to Dennis Connor's Stars & Stripes (USA-34) but was used by the Connor team in the America's Cup since she was considered to
be the faster boat. Young America is now part of the permanent collection of the Storm King Art Center
in Mountainville, NY.
- Columbia (1899): Columbia
brought together the formidable talents of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff as designer and Charlie Barr as skipper. Columbia easily defeated Sir Thomas
Lipton (a British tea magnate) and his Shamrock.
- Columbia (1901): Columbia was
refitted and again skippered by Charlie Barr and went on to become the first yacht to successfully defend the America's Cup twice (the others being Intrepid
and Courageous).
