| 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race Underway |
|
The 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race is underway beginning in Vigo, Spain and headed toward Cape Town, South Africa.
This edition of the classic around the world race is being sailed in the new Volvo Open 70
monohulls and the boats are showing some teething problems. Already three of the seven boats have had serious problems: Pirates of the Caribbean skippered by
Paul Cayard has had partial keel failure and is in Cascais, Portugal to affect repairs, movistar skippered by Bouwe Bekking suffered structural failure
after falling off a wave and Sunergy and Friends has been forced to divert to Porto Santo to repair their boom.
On the positive side, the Volvo Open 70s have certainly proved to be fast as evidenced by Sébastien Josse and the crew of ABN Amro Two covering 504 miles
in 24 hours just a day and a half into the race. The previous record was held by last race winners, illbruck, who set a distance of 480 miles on a fast passage across the Atlantic. ABN Amro Two's 500 miles is just a touch short of the all-out sailing record of 535 miles, set by movistar earlier
this year during a delivery trip.

| America's Cup 2007 Website Profiles Sappho |
|
The 2007 America's Cup website has added a profile of the yacht
Sappho to its
"Where Are They Now?" feature. Sappho
was successful as one of four defenders of the 1871 America's Cup along with Columbia, Dauntless and Livonia (the yacht
to be sailed was selected each morning before the racing). Sappho also set a transatlantic crossing time of 12 days, 9 hours and 36 minutes between
New York and Queenstown, a record which would stand until 1905 when the famous yacht Atlantic made the crossing in 11 days 16 hours and 22 minutes.
