Alinghi Wins Louis Vuitton Act 9, 2005 America’s Cup Class Season Championship

Alinghi won a tie-breaker with BMW Oracle Racing to capture Act of the Louis Vuitton Cup. Alinghi previously had clinched the 2005 America's Cup Class Season Championship by virtue of winning all but one of the previous Acts held in 2005. Emirates Team New Zealand finishes second in the season standings by virtue of winning a tie-breaker with BMW Oracle Racing.

BMW Oracle Racing missed winning Act 9 by only fractions of a boat length when it finished second to Desafío Español in the final fleet race. BMW Oracle's skipper Chris Dickson later commented:

“We are very pleased with our performance here. We have finished the last three regattas tied at the top of the leaderboard with Alinghi. We have closed the gap. We are closer to them now than we were two and a half years ago. Next year, we will be closer again and that sets it up nicely for a Challenger to win the America’s Cup in 2007.”

Alinghi Wins Louis Vuitton Act 8

Alinghi continued it's dominance of the Louis Vuitton Acts by winning Act 8. However, the Swiss showed some chinks in their armor by losing a match race for the first time this year, losing to both BMW Oracle Racing (not completely unexpected) but also to the French K-Challenge team. K-Challenge was the story of the regatta with wins over Alinghi and Emirates Team New Zealand as well as five other victories to give them 5th place, their best showing in the Louis Vuitton Cup Acts thus far. Even more amazing is that K-Challenge did this with the second oldest boat in the fleet!

Racing continues in Trapani with the fleet racing of Act 9 beginning October 7th.

Mike Ingham, 2005 Thistle Champion, won the regatta after Eduardo Cordero, 2005 Sunfish Champion, had 2 OCS's on the final day of racing. Even with the OCS's, Cordero still finished 2nd followed by the youngest competitor, Optimist Champion Matt Wefer.
