| Tug Townsend Wins ISC Club Championship |
|
Tug Townsend along with crew and brother Bill Townsend are the 2004 ISC Club Champions. The Club
Championship regatta was held on October 16 in "challenging" conditions: temperatures
hovered in the 40s with wind chills in the 30s combined with a short rain squall and generally threatening
weather all day. Winds built during the day from 17-21 mph for the 1st race to 18-23 mph sustained with
gusts to 30 mph for the 4th race.
Winning the Club Championship required attention to shifts, perserverance and survival. Tug demonstrated
all of those in spades as he won the Championship despite capsizing in the final race! Tug and Bill righted
their boat and went on to finish the race.
Complete results are posted on the Regatta Results page.
UPDATE: there are now photos from the regatta posted in the Photo Gallery.

I just stumbled across this photo

| Website Navigation Tweaks and New Racing Area Page |
|
I have created two new categories in the website navigation bar, Racing and Social,
and removed one, Calendar. I believe the change is an improvement as pages are more
logically categorized now.
I have also created a new Racing Area page that contains a short description of Geist Reservoir and
the racing area used by ISC. Links to the ISC racecourse references have also moved to this page from
the Racing Calendar page (I never liked them there since it didn't make sense to look for the racecourse
reference on the calendar page).

| US Sailing Championship of Champions (Jack Brown Trophy), Day Three |
|
ISC's Ed Spengeman finished 10th in the US Sailing Championship of Champions.
The race committee managed to run 5 races on Saturday, the last day of racing. Ed scored a 5th, an 8th, two 12ths and
a 15th (his throwout for the series). Michael Funsch of Harrison, NY with crew Jay Lurie of New Canaan, CT (2004 Vanguard 15 and
Interclub Dinghy class champions) won the regatta and receive US Sailing's Jack Brown Trophy.
Multiple National Champion, Glenn Darden (Fort Worth, TX) and crew Wulf Focke (LaPorte, TX) captured second with only one finish (discarded) out of the top ten. Brent
Barbehenn (Moorestown, NJ) and crew Ben Stock (Columbus, OH) from the Jet 14 Class came on strong winning one race and placing third in
two others to climb to third overall. Early leader and Championship of Champions defending champion (then representing the Lightning Class)
Allen Terhune, Jr. (Beachwood, NJ) and crew Katie Terhune (Beachwood, NJ) slipped to fourth overall with a couple of bottom half finishes on the day.
US Sailing has a Day Three Report as well
as a Press Release and the Raritan Yacht Club has
racing results posted.

| US Sailing Women's Match Racing Championship (Allegra Knapp Mertz Trophy) |
|
In an exciting and dramatic finish, after a postponement due to blustery conditions, Cory Sertl (Rochester, NY) with crew Pease
Glaser (Long Beach, CA) Jody Swanson (Buffalo, NY) and Debbie Probst ( Fort Wayne, IN) captured the US Sailing's Women's
Match Racing Championship in Newport, RI. Highlander sailors will
recognize Debbie Probst as a regular on that classes' midwest racing circuit and a past national champion
in the class. In a best of five finals Sertl and her team faced an undefeated Melissa Purdy
(Tiburon, CA) and her crew of Hannah Swett (New York, NY), Whitney Connor (Boston, MA), and Joan Touchette (Middletown, RI.).
The win earned Sertl an invitation to the Cicada
International Women's Match Racing Championship later this month in Bermuda courtesy of New York Yacht Club
and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Sertl who was part of Jody
Swanson's recent Yngling Olympic campaign is a two-time Rolex
Yachtswoman of the Year, a former Olympian, and a winner of the Rolex
International Women's Keelboat Championship.
US Sailing has a photo gallery, daily reports and other information on the 2004
Women's Match Racing Championship and the NYYC has a webpage with complete results plus a small photo gallery.

| US Sailing Championship of Champions (Jack Brown Trophy), Day Two |
|
ISC's Ed Spengeman improved his overall position to 4th with scores of 4, 5 and 5 today at the
US Sailing Championship of Champions. The race committee worked hard to get racing in despite little to no
wind and finally got in 3 races late in the afternoon. The final day of racing is tomorrow.
US Sailing has a Day Two Report

| US Sailing Championship of Champions (Jack Brown Trophy), Day One |
|
ISC's Ed Spengeman and crew Jess Gerry (one of the instructors for ISC's Sailing Camp) are participating in the US Sailing Championship of Champions
as the Highlander Class representative. The Championship of Champions is being sailed
at the Raritan Yacht Club in Perth
Amboy, NJ. The racing area is on Raritan Bay which is
fed by the Raritan and Author Kill Rivers and the regatta is being sailed in
JY15s.
The racing was hampered by several challenges: remnants of Hurricane Jeanne producing
light winds interspersed with squalls, strong full moon tides (aided by copious rainfall thanks
to Hurricane Jeanne) and a relocation of the race course requested by the Coast Guard to
allow passage of an "armed vessel". Three races were completed and Ed currently stands
in 8th place with finishes of 10, 7 and 12.
US Sailing has a Day One Report
and the Raritan Yacht Club has racing results posted.
