| History of Geist Reservoir |
|
The Log Cabin Animal Hospital at Geist has published a very interesting compilation
of material on the history of the Geist Reservoir area including:
- a biography of Clarence Geist, the reservoir's namesake
- a history of Lawrence Township
- photos of the now inundated Germantown (ISC is located very near the original location of Germantown)
- photos of the construction of Geist Reservoir (including an early aerial photo of ISC before the surrounding area was developed for housing)
Apparently, the ISC access road was Main Street for Germantown (also known as Germantown Road).
One of ISC's regattas is named after the lost town of Germantown, but I hadn't realized how close
the connection between ISC and Germantown was until now.
Information on the history of ISC is available here.

| Sail Trim and Tuning Seminar on June 16 |
|
Come spend an afternoon at ISC and learn how to better trim and balance with Skip Dieball
of North Sails. Skip is an active one-design
sailor currently sailing actively in Finns, Interlakes, J-22s, Thistles, and
Highlanders.
Part 1 of the session will involve a dry land look at sail trim on a couple of the
classes sailed locally. Part 2 will be on the water, with you sailing your own boat,
as Skip motors around the participants offering comments with a video camera in hand.
After sailing, Part 3 will be held in the ISC Clubhouse, where we can review the
afternoon's video with Skip's commentary, not to mention some pizza and cold beverages.
The seminar will be held June 16th from 2pm to 8pm at ISC. If you plan to attend or
have any questions, please contact the event organizer and host: Paul Dovey (evening
phone (XXX) XXX-XXXX or email (email address removed)).

| Fire Boat Fundraiser Nets $65,000 |
|
The May 1st fundraiser sponsored by the Geist Lake Coalition raised $65,000 towards
the purchase of a $90,000 fire boat for the Fishers Fire Department.
ISC donated a week of Junior Training/Sailing Camp to the auction.
According to an article
on topics.com, the Fishers Fire Department had hoped to have the new boat on
the water by Memorial Day weekend. Those plans have been postponed until June, at the earliest,
while the department attempts to find sources for the remaining $25,000 of the boat's
purchase price.
The new fire boat will be utilized in potential firefighting operations involving any of 700 homes
(valued at more than $1 billion combined) situated on the shores of Geist Reservoir. Many of these homes are
surrounded by water on three sides and are difficult to access with land-based firefighting equipment.

| State to Add 25 Conservation Officers |
|
The Indianapolis Star reports
that Indiana will be adding
25 new conservation officers to assist in patroling the state's lakes,
rivers and reservoirs. The added officers are intended to help decrease the number of boating
fatalities in the state (7 in 2003 and 14 in 2002) by enforcing existing laws and through increased boater
education.
One of the biggest problems contributing to boating fatalities is the lack of life jackets for each
person on board a watercraft. 12 of the 21 boaters who died in 2002/2003 were not wearing life
jackets at the time of their death. Also, many boaters aren't knowledgeable of the boating rules
(see the DNR Indiana Boating Laws
webpage for more information on Indiana's boating regulations).
ISC member Andy McDonald welcomed the enforcement and education efforts:
"I would like to see things as strict as possible. The safer the better."
ISC member Don Wilson favored increased education rather than stepped-up
enforcement:
"It should be left up to each individual person."
