Basic Racing Courses

Adults who have completed the beginners course or want additional basic racing knowledge are encouraged to attend. It is a low pressure opportunity for racing beginners to practice, ask questions and learn basics of tactics, starting and advanced boat handling. Sessions will be conducted in the Flying Juniors, Sunfish and Lasers. Students will learn the following skills:

  • Starting, including rules, timing, determining the favored end, wind direction, etc.
  • Mark rounding techniques and boat handling
  • Basic rules for racing, including right of way rules and mark rounding situations, etc.
  • Course strategy including how wind shifts work and other small boat racing techniques
The Basic Racing Course for 2007 will be held on the following dates: May 8-12 (6-9PM on Tuesday and Thursday and 9AM-4PM on Saturday).

Requirements

Adult training students must be a member of ISC. Members joining ISC for the first time will have the training fee waived for one person in the family. Any additional family members or other ISC members may register and take the class for a fee of $75. The cost of the basic racing class will be $50.

In order to continue building skills, students who have completed a class are encouraged to use the ISC sailboats when they are available and when there is a safety boat scheduled or in operation (there is a $15 rental fee for use of club boats). This usually means Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. Students are encouraged to become active as crew and participate in the informal Wednesday night races.

Cost

One training session included with membership, $75 charge for additional family members or additional sessions, $50 charge for basic racing.
